01 The title of Thomas Friedman’s 2005 book, The World Is Flat, was based

on the belief that globalization would inevitably bring us closer together.

02 It has done that, but it has also inspired us to build barriers.

03 When faced with perceived threatsthe financial crisis, terrorism, violent

conflict, refugees and immigration, the increasing gap between rich and

poorpeople cling more tightly to their groups.

04 One founder of a famous social media company believed social media

would unite us.

05 In some respects it has, but it has simultaneously given voice and

organizational ability to new cyber tribes, some of whom spend their time

spreading blame and division across the World Wide Web.

06 There seem now to be as many tribes, and as much conflict between them,

as there have ever been.

07 Is it possible for these tribes to coexist in a world where the concept of “us

and them” remains?

01 Chewing leads to smaller particles for swallowing, and more exposed surface area for digestive enzymes to act on.

02 In other words, it means the extraction of more fuel and raw materials from

a mouthful of food.

NEIL: Yes.

NEIL: Yes.

NEIL: As for "more exposed surface area for digestive enzymes to act on," please see my rewording of it. Chewing food longer breaks (a large piece of) food down to smaller pieces. Each smaller piece has more surface area. More surface area means there is more surface area that digestive enzymes (i.e. stomach juice) to come in contact with and to digest the food more easily. I hope that make it clear. If not, ask again: It's free. :)
